In 1958, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Clark, Sr. began a legacy for their family and the city of Baton Rouge. They opened a shop in the downtown area, one block from the Mississippi River that sold paint and wallpaper but also included custom framing. The process of framing was very difficult as the department was located on the second floor of the building. Large supplies for framing, including molding, had to be hoisted up from the street to a loading door on the second floor. Still, the gallery saw value in providing this service.

Taylor Clark, Jr.In 1960, Taylor Clark expanded in a new location. Remaining close to downtown Baton Rouge, the family built a space that eventually totaled over 6,000 square feet. Taylor Clark, Jr. joined the family business and strived on bringing fine art pieces into the gallery. This move grew the gallery from a paint and wallpaper shop offering custom framing to a gallery including, fine paintings and prints.

Custom framing was always a large part of this family business. James Stampley, master framer, began with the gallery in 1962. He framed each piece with hand craftsmanship, cutting the glass by hand and using a tiny hammer to join the frame borders.

The gallery began framing many Audubon prints for their clients. As they became more popular, Taylor Clark, Jr. decided to buy the gallery's first set of Audubon prints at an auction in New York City in 1966. Demand was so strong he bought his second set three months later. Eventually the gallery would own a total of five sets, making it one of the premier dealers of Audubon prints in the world. Taylor Clark, Jr. gained a lot of exposure to the Audubon market and became an expert in identifying originals and their value. He personally removed all Audubon prints selected for purchase from their bindings to examine the print value with the customers.

Today, Taylor Clark Gallery includes three 3 rd generation family members involved in the business carrying on the Taylor Clark legacy. The gallery remains focused on personal customer service, quality art pieces and fine custom framing - a fter 42 years of experience, James still insists on completing all frames with his experienced hand craftsmanship.

Though the gallery is based in Baton Rouge, its customer base extends outside of Louisiana to serve clients both nationally and internationally.
