A.There are no hard and fast rules, but certain subjects do work better in certain areas. For instance, botanical subjects and still lifes featuring fruit and other food items work better in dining rooms and kitchen areas. Other subjects such as landscapes and portraits tend to work better in living rooms, dens and bedrooms. Abstract subjects can go just about anywhere.

A.It is actually very easy to tell the difference between an original Audubon print and a reproduction. First, look for the J. Whatman watermark in the paper. If it is not there, it is not an original. Secondly, measure the size of the paper. The size of the original Audubon bird prints was double elephant folio, or approximately 26" x 39". The size of the original Audubon quadruped prints was imperial folio, or approximately 22" x 28". Both works were also done in an octavo format that measured approximately 6" x 10". If it is a different size, it is probably not an original. Also, the original prints were colored by hand. Reproduced color will not have the same intensity and will appear flat and dull under magnification.

A.We suggest beginning with the most visible areas of the house where people are likely to congregate. The mantle area over a fireplace in the living room would be a good place to start. If you do not have a fireplace or mantle, then perhaps behind a sofa on a prominent wall. Next, I would put something in a dining area such as the dining room or kitchen. Today, kitchens and dining rooms are merging into one big room and people tend to like to gather here as well. After placing art in the more public areas of the home, I would then move to the more private areas of the home including the bedrooms and bathrooms. Remember, it is important to like the art you are placing in your home. It may take some time to find just the right pieces, but it will be worth it.

A.Your primary reason for buying art should be because you like it and will enjoy seeing it. If it goes up in value over time, wonderful! If not, you will still be enjoying the emotional value it gives you. Some art does appreciate over time but not everything. Stocks and bonds make a better investment; however, they are not as exciting to look at.

A.It's simple. Buy what you like. Only you know what kind of art you like. By what gives you that emotional connection every time you see it. After all, this is something you are bringing in to your personal space and will be living with it every day.
